Our Volunteer Spotlight features Alana Newill's story:

Alana Newill, a fellow pug lover, adopted Walter (formerly Milo) from DFW Pug Rescue. “Walter has completely stolen mine and my fiancé Anthony’s hearts. We are so grateful for Walter and to DFW Pug Rescue for bringing him into our lives.”

I’ve always loved pugs for their funny personalities, loyalty, and endless affection, and being able to give back through volunteering has been incredibly meaningful. I started volunteering with DFWPRC in 2022, helping with transport and events, and more recently began fostering. What I enjoy most about volunteering is the community. It’s amazing to see the compassion and teamwork that go into helping each pug find their forever home.

Alana and Walter live in Dallas, TX, and visit White Rock Dog Park most weekends! Besides dog-mom duties, Alana is an active member of The CycleBar Preston Forest studio and also a Camp Gladiator member. She grew up in East Texas and is an aunt to four nieces and nephews. Alana graduated from Dallas Baptist University in 2014 with a degree in Business Marketing. Since then, she has worked in various industries and roles. Her current position as a Personal Assistant keeps her busy during the week, mainly focusing on planning travel itineraries and managing her household.

Alana is excited to volunteer with DFWPRC and hopes to dedicate her time and energy to helping the precious pugs in need, as well as to building relationships with this wonderful group of volunteers!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We’re thrilled to share that this year’s Pug-O-Ween, held on October 26th at Heritage Park in Flower Mound, Texas, was an incredible success! Thanks to all of you—our community of pug lovers, sponsors, and volunteers—the event was filled with joy, laughter, and plenty of wagging tails.

We were blessed with beautiful weather and received an overwhelming number of messages from attendees who loved the vendors, activities, and the wonderful park location. It truly was a celebration of community and compassion.

Here’s a quick look at the numbers from this year’s event:

• 44 generous sponsors donated a combined $17,700 to help cover event expenses.

• More than 40 volunteers helped set up, staff activities, and tear down at the end of the night.

• Thanks to countless donations, we offered 40 Silent Auction items and over 100 donated items for sale.

• Over 100 attendees joined us for Saturday’s kickoff, and more than 400 people came out for Sunday’s main event.

• Together, we raised over $30,000 to support our ongoing rescue efforts!

We also want to extend a big congratulations to all of our costume contest winners—you and your pugs truly brought the spirit of Halloween to life!

Welcome Back, MJ — Our New Foster Director

Every now and then, someone returns to the rescue family in a way that reminds me why this work matters so much. Today, I get to share some good news: MJ McKenna is returning as our Foster Director for DFW Pug Rescue.

MJ’s story with us goes back to 2011, when she adopted her first Chug from DFWPRC. From that moment on, she jumped in with both feet—transporting, fostering, pug-sitting, and eventually serving as our Foster Director before taking a well-deserved break. Her heart for rescue never truly wavered.

Like so many of us, she’s had her fair share of “foster failures,” and she understands that familiar moment when a pug locks eyes with you and silently says, “You know you’re not sending me anywhere.” That kind of experience gives her a deep understanding of the families and foster homes she’ll be supporting.

Let’s welcome her back to the greatest pug rescue around—where “we rescue ALL pugs, regardless of age or medical condition.”

CuppaPug Play Days

Dear DFW Pug Rescue Family,

We’re excited to reach out to our amazing volunteers and past adopters with another special invitation this week to participate in CuppaPug Play Days!

Our partnership with CuppaPug has been an incredible opportunity for DFW Pug Rescue. Together, we’ve been able to share the joy of pugs with even more people in our community — and the impact has been remarkable!

Thanks to your continued support and the visibility this partnership has brought:

• Adoptions and foster applications have soared.

• Rescue awareness has expanded, helping us reach new supporters and pug lovers.

• Long-term residents have found their forever homes, with spotlights helping them connect with the perfect families.

Last October, we celebrated 22 adoptions — this year, we’re thrilled to share that number has more than doubled to 50 adoptions in October alone!

Some of our favorite success stories include:

• Dougie Boy, who spent over 400 days in foster care, is now happily adopted and thriving in his forever home.

• Tilley, after 300+ days in foster care, is now living her best life surrounded by love.

We’re currently working with a few adoptable pugs this week, but as of now, approximately 10 pugs are waiting to be released from the clinic for assessment before heading to CuppaPug, 10 are pending adoption, and 8 are on heartworm rest. That means our number of available pugs for play days is smaller than usual — but what a great problem to have!

Because of this wonderful adoption success, we’d love for our past adopters to bring their pugs to CuppaPug Play Days to help show off those happy endings and continue supporting DFW Pug Rescue’s mission. Your adopted pugs are living proof of the love and joy that rescue makes possible!

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Emma Nalbantov's story:

My name is Emma, and I’m a newer addition to the DFW Pug Rescue Volunteer/Community Event Team. I absolutely love pugs, especially senior ones. They have such a special place in my heart. I am a crazy pug lady, with dozens of pug items in my possession, ranging from mugs and magnets to slippers, clothes, and decorations, including earrings.

My 15-year-old pug, who passed away in March 2025, was my entire world, best friend, and soul dog. She is the reason I fell in love with pugs and can't imagine myself adopting another breed. I got her from DFW Pug Rescue when I was 11 years old.

Sadly, I had no idea of all the pug events hosted whenever I had her; otherwise, I would have loved to attend many of them with her. I found out about the events after visiting the site (and noticing all the comings and goings), so I started attending pug events to fill my cup of pug time/adoration while I didn’t have one myself and wasn’t able to foster. Celia could tell that I genuinely love and have enthusiasm for the breed and asked me to be part of her team. I quickly became immersed in the community events and even thought of the end of summer “Bark to the 80’s” theme!

I hadn’t felt ready for a long time but fell in love with a fostered DFW pug at a CuppaPug soft opening event. Now I have another sweet pug friend to give/receive love, and he is a precious senior! Anything pug-themed makes me extremely happy, and I’m so grateful for DFW Pug Rescue.

Honoring our past, celebrating today, and looking forward to our 30th year of pug love.

What a fantastic Pug-O-Ween this year! Our 29th celebration was one for the memory books. Bertha and her amazing team of volunteers truly outdid themselves, keeping the tradition alive, raising much-needed funds for our pugs, and giving everyone a chance to show off their wild and wonderful creativity. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, another costume comes along that leaves you smiling and shaking your head in pure amazement.

For 29 years, this incredible pug community—our pug family—has kept the spirit of Pug-O-Ween going strong. From those early days with just over fifty people to the hundreds who joined us this year, the love, laughter, and loyalty have only grown.

Thank you to everyone who came out, donated, volunteered, or simply shared in the fun. Because of you, our pugs continue to get the second chance they deserve. Here’s to next year—our 30th anniversary! I can’t wait to see what Bertha and her wonderful crew have planned for that milestone celebration.

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Barbara Peard's story:

DFW Pug Rescue is where it all started. After losing my first pug, Mickie, to pancreatitis, I went to a Wine Gala in Plano. I was hurting badly. I wasn’t there for the wine or the people. I just wanted to be surrounded by pugs. I needed that kind of comfort.

The moment I walked in, I saw one small pug sitting alone in the middle of the room. No wagging tail, no sparkle in her eyes. Someone mentioned that if I wanted to meet her, I’d have to go to her. “She won’t come to you,” they said. So, I did what felt natural. I walked over, sat on the floor, and gently lifted her into my lap. She froze, stiff as a board, scared, unsure of this new world she’d been thrown into.

For fifteen minutes, neither of us moved. Just two souls quietly trying to figure each other out. She was an eight-year-old puppy mill mom, discarded because she could no longer produce litters. I whispered to her that if she came home with me, I’d make sure her retirement years were the best of her life.

Something shifted after that. Slowly, she softened, pressing her little body into my chest. And I cried tears for Mickie, for her, for all the broken ones who just need a second chance. I hadn’t planned on adopting that day. But she made the decision for both of us.

That moment marked the beginning of my journey with DFW Pug Rescue. One pug healed a broken heart, and in doing so, opened the door to a lifetime of rescue, love, and second chances. The rest is history.

Say Hello to Kimmy Wood – Our New Foster Coordinator!

Hi, pug people! I’m Kimmy Wood, and I’m so excited to step into the role of Foster Coordinator for DFW Pug Rescue.

A little about me—I grew up in the DC area, moved all over the country, and finally

landed in Texas in 2019 with my husband, Daniel, and our English Bulldog, Bentley. Dogs have always been part of my world (sometimes two or three at a time!), but my heart was stolen by pugs when I was just a kid.

My very first pug, Shorty, was my ride-or-die through my twenties—we crisscrossed the East Coast together, and he was the best little buddy a girl could ask for. Fast forward to today, and I now have my pug, Ollie, who has been with us for three years, and Penny, our foster failure from earlier this year. Between the two of them, my house is full of chaos, laughter, and the best snuggles at night.

I’m so excited to lend my time to DFW Pug Rescue and help match these amazing little pugs with loving foster families. The volunteers here are truly special people, and I’m thrilled to be part of this team. Here’s to lots of wagging tails, pug snorts, and forever homes ahead—because life is always better when it’s pug-tastic! 🐾

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Clay Hull's story:

Clay discovered DFW Pug Rescue after she and her husband, John, got their first pug, Bear. As they drove to meet him, Clay jokingly told her husband they wouldn’t get the first dog they saw, and it could take time before they found “the one.”

However, as soon as Bear climbed in her arms, all that careful planning went out the window faster than a squirrel at a dog park. Bear made Clay a “pug person” and opened the door to a fun community of dedicated individuals passionate about pugs.

Clay began volunteering with DFW Pug Rescue, conducting home visits to ensure pugs go to good, safe home environments. She is now a Fund Development Coordinator and proud supporter of DFW Pug Rescue, a truly remarkable organization that embodies compassion, dedication and love for one of the most endearing dog breeds—pugs. No Pug Left Behind!

Transporting pugs is one of the key activities of our group! We transport pugs into our care directly from owners and rescuers. We transport pugs to and from their foster homes for appointments. We sometimes will transport pugs to their adoptive homes. 

What do you need to transport? You must be a licensed and insured driver over the age of 18. Your car must have a working air conditioner in the summer and a heater in the winter. You should stock your vehicle with the following items: a crate big enough to transport most pugs, slip leads, your leashes, water, a water dish, poop bags, and a towel. Many pugs transport just fine in a car without a crate, but we suggest you crate the pug for your safety and the safety of the pug. Many pugs we transport are new to us, and we don’t know how well they travel in a car.

Transporters are expected to provide their crates, especially on long journeys. No one will expect you to leave the pug in your crate and hand it over. If you do not have a crate available, please let me know. We usually have extras and can provide you with one. A slip lead is always good to have on hand in case the pug comes without a collar or a harness. You are welcome to bring your harness and collars and use them during transport but use the slip lead too. It’s an extra measure of security for the rambunctious pug that may pull out of a harness or collar. 

We are in Texas, where it gets hot. Always keep water and a water dish on hand during your transport. This is necessary for long transports but advisable on short hops in case there is car trouble and you and the pug are stuck for a while. Poop bags and towels are self-explanatory. I always keep these items in my car, so I am always prepared to transport! 

Volunteering for transport is easy. First, just sign up to be a volunteer with DFWPRC by clicking here and filling out the application. Once we receive your application, we will place you on our group email list, and you will receive email notices when transports are needed. We have transportation opportunities almost daily. Reply to the email directly to the poster of the email and tell the poster that you would like to do the transport! If you can only handle a part of the transport, let us know that as well! We will then report that we have the transport partially filled and see if we can get help for the other parts of the transport. 

Transport requests are processed in the order they are received. On multi-city/multi- state transports, I will post a run sheet with short-distance legs to volunteer for. Just contact me to let me know which leg you can fill. The run sheet will be very detailed with the date, time, and place of the legs to be transported. The longest transport I have been on was to Mississippi on a breeder release. That transport involved an overnight stay and special crates and instructions for the transport. Two of us went, and although it was a long haul, we both felt very blessed to be a part of it.

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Terry Nonnemacher's story:

Over 50 years, I built a long and rewarding career. After working for Nabisco for 38 years in the Northeast and then working for Freeman in TX for 12 years, and acting as an adjunct professor along the way, I found myself ready for the next step, retirement.

When my wife and I relocated to Texas 17 years ago, our first exposure to the pug community was with a Puggle named Mozart, whom we “saved” from a family who couldn’t care for him. Shortly after, we heard about DFW Pug Rescue and adopted Fiona as his playmate. The two of them lived almost 17 years together, until they both crossed the rainbow bridge. Our connection with the rescue began there and grew to personal commitments down the road.

After decades of working, retirement did not signify the end of purpose but rather the beginning of a new adventure. A lifelong love for animals and an appreciation for their unconditional companionship naturally led me to the mission of DFW Pug Rescue. This nonprofit organization, dedicated to rescuing and rehoming pugs in need, provided an avenue to combine compassion with action. My involvement with the rescue has encompassed coordinating volunteers, providing transportation, and involvement in events, all allowing me to make a tangible difference in the lives of these loyal and loving pups.

The adoption of our current bonded pair, Bella and Luna, continues to grow our love for pugs and drives our commitment to supporting the rescue. Our girls also live with another rescue, Remi, who is a pug imposter and a “big” part of our family.

Through volunteering and the connection with the rescue community, the joy of helping these babies find loving homes, and the stories of transformation bring both of us immense satisfaction and purpose.

The Dallas Pride Music Festival at Fair Park in Dallas on Saturday, June 14 will feature a variety of musical and dance performances on multiple indoor and outdoor stages. More than 200 vendors will have booths to see and shop at the festival. Family Pride Zone, an area designed for families, will feature several bounce houses, face painting, entertainment for the kids and the Pride Train ride in the Automobile Building at Fair Park. The festival also includes Teen Pride, which fosters a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ youth ages 13 to 19 and their friends to enjoy live entertainment from artists and DJs, and other age-appropriate activities. Local animal rescue groups will also be on-site for guests to meet a possible new furry family member.

Heat Stroke in Dogs

Summer heat can be deadly for our beloved pugs. As someone who has held a lifeless pug in their arms—lost too soon to heatstroke—I cannot stress this enough: please keep your pug cool and safe. Pugs are a brachycephalic breed with short noses and flat faces. While this makes them adorable, it also makes it extremely difficult for them to breathe and regulate their body temperature. Even just 10 to 15 minutes in high heat or humidity can cause severe distress—or worse.

Pugs do not sweat like we do. They overheat fast, which can happen before you realize something is wrong. Leaving a pug outside for “just a few minutes” or taking them on a midday walk can have tragic consequences. Hot pavement can burn their paws. Overexertion can shut down their organs. And a parked car, even with cracked windows, can become a death trap in minutes. Please—keep your pug indoors during the heat of the day. Walk them early in the morning or late in the evening. Always have water available. Watch for signs of overheating: heavy panting, drooling, disorientation, or collapsing. We rescue these precious souls to give them a second chance. Let us protect them with the love and caution they so deeply deserve.

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Jill Nonnemacher's story:  

Shortly after moving from NJ to TX 17 years ago, we lost our Dalmatian, Maggie, and adopted an adorable puggle puppy from a friend who could not keep him. Soon after adopting Mozart, we knew he needed a friend to play with. We were fortunate to find out about DFW Pug Rescue and the great work they were doing. This led to our adoption of 2-year-old Fiona Apple. Fi and Mo became fast besties. I fell in love with these sweet, cuddly, funny puggies and knew I would always have them. Both Mo & Fi lived a long, wonderful life together for 17 years. We were very saddened about the loss, but knew we wanted to adopt more pugs again.

At that time in my life, I had retired from my psychotherapy practice, leaving me more time to create and exhibit my art and do volunteer work. I felt drawn to the rescue and wanted to get more involved with this amazing group that “leaves no pug behind”. I started volunteering, doing home visits and helping at events. While volunteering at Pug-O-Ween, we fell in love with this adorable, sweet, bonded pair of girls one and a half years ago. We knew they were for us and immediately started the adoption process. It did not take long before we brought them home, gave them all our love, and continued to spoil them.

Since then, Bella and Luna have welcomed an adopted pug imposter brother, Remi, who is now 1 year old. My husband and I are proud to be part of this amazing rescue group. The incredible people we have met tirelessly go far and above for the love of these pugs. I enjoy being part of Celia’s event team, helping at events, and sharing about the rescue’s mission and commitment to the pugs.

Heartworm disease is preventable!

Over the past few newsletters, we have shared the growing challenge DFW Pug Rescue faces with heartworm-positive rescues. Sadly, the number of pugs rescued suffering from this preventable disease continues to rise. Treating just one heartworm-positive dog costs around $1,500—a cost we gladly bear to save their lives, but one that puts a tremendous strain on our resources.

Heartworm disease is not just a health issue—it is a heartbreaking one. It damages the heart, lungs, and other organs, and if left untreated, it can be fatal. It is even harder to accept that this suffering is entirely preventable. A simple monthly dose of heartworm preventative can protect your dog or cat from this dangerous illness. We are asking from the heart—please, keep your pets on heartworm preventative. And if you can, consider donating to help us cover treatment costs for the sweet rescue angels already in our care. Every dollar makes a difference, and every treated pug gets a new chance at a healthy, happy life. Together, we can prevent future suffering and give these deserving pugs the second chance they desperately need.

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Bertha Santellano's story:  

My lifelong love for pugs began when I was 18 and started my family. Over the years, Squish, Squash, and Blackie graced our lives with their fun, quirky personalities, growing alongside my kids. After losing our last pug, Squash, we opened our hearts to other furry companions: Joe, a beagle mix, and Pebbles, a cocker mix who lived to the incredible age of 20. In 2011, we relocated to Texas, where I discovered DFW Pug Rescue and rekindled my love for those sweet, wrinkled faces that had always held a special place in my heart. Vaughn and I started volunteering in 2022. We have been involved in transport, donation pickups, home visits, fostering, events, and more.

Currently, I serve as the Fund Development Director for DFW Pug Rescue. Throughout this journey, we have been blessed with many furry friends, including Alice, who unfortunately gained her wings far too soon in 2022. Her time with us was a gentle reminder of the love and joy that pugs bring to our lives and introduced Vaughn to their incredible world. Since then, our family has grown even larger with Hazel (planned), Willow (a transport fail), and Charlie (our foster fail)—all adopted in 2022 and 2023. Throughout it all, I hold firm in my belief that giving back creates a brighter world. For me, that means contributing to what brings me joy: witnessing pup matches come to life, hearing fellow foster stories, and soaking in the smiles at our events. These sweet pups return the love they receive, and being part of this vibrant, compassionate community is truly a blessing.

Our Volunteer Spotlight features Jim McLaury's story:  

My first introduction to pugs was almost 14 years ago. My wife and I stopped at a local PetSmart in KC to look at rescue dogs from the Kansas State Penitentiary. Diana (my wife) found a 6-month-old puggle that was already house-trained. Love at first sight. So, Piper joined our other two dogs.

Piper and I moved to Texas a little over a year and a half ago. She was 12 and not in very good health. Her eyesight was failing, and she had cancer all over her body. I could not be selfish and had to say goodbye. I was not ready to adopt another pug just yet but began looking when I discovered DFW Pug Rescue. Retired and needing something to do, I started transporting pugs. I picked up this black pug named Faith. I had to keep her overnight and it was love at first sight again. She laid down beside me, stared up at me with her big brown eyes and I became a transport failure. Lady Di was a nickname I had for my wife, so renaming Faith Lady Di was a no brainer. Thank you, DFW Pug Rescue, for my constant companion.

Our Foster Dog Spotlight features Jeeves' story: 

Two-year-old pug mix Jeeves is an outgoing and playful boy who adapts well to any pack! He enjoys any activity that involves spending time with people and other dogs, including going to the dog park, going for walks, wrestling with his fellow canines, playing with stuffies and chew toys, and snuggling next to his humans in bed at night. Jeeves has lovely mealtime manners and is housetrained and doggie door trained. His ideal forever family will provide him with plenty of exercise, involve him in as many family activities as possible, and minimize his solo time. We think he would love to have another friendly pup to play with. If you’re looking for a good-natured best friend who is as extroverted as you are, Jeeves is your guy! Apply for him today!

After careful consideration (and a few extra treats), our pugs have graciously invited their owners to the upcoming DFW Pug Rescue “Pups & Pints” event! But there is a catch—you can only come if you behave.

Join us on Sunday, March 9th, at 1:00 PM at Birdie’s Social Club (2735 W 5th Street, Ft. Worth, TX), for an afternoon of tail wags, belly rubs, and refreshing beverages. While you sip on drink specials, our pugs will be busy socializing, gossiping about their humans, and judging everyone's treat choices. When DFW Pug Rescue was founded in 1996, we knew one thing for sure: we could only succeed with the help of dedicated volunteers. Twenty-nine years later, that belief remains unchanged. You are the backbone of this organization, the reason we can continue our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome pugs in need. 

Unlike many organizations, DFW Pug Rescue has no paid positions. The passion, generosity, and selflessness of our volunteers’ power everything we do. From transporting pugs to vet appointments, fostering scared and neglected dogs, organizing adoption events, fundraising, processing applications, and so much more, every single role is vital. No task is too small, no effort goes unnoticed. 

We know that volunteering is not always easy. Giving these pugs a second chance takes time, patience, and an endless amount of love. Some days are filled with happy adoptions and wagging tails, while others bring challenges and heartache. And yet, you show up—day after day, week after week—because you believe in this mission. 

Words cannot fully express our gratitude for you. Your dedication, compassion, and willingness to go the extra mile mean the world to us and, most importantly, to the pugs whose lives you change. Because of you, countless pugs have found safety, health, and love in forever homes.

Did you miss the New Orleans Jazz Festival on Bourbon Street during the Super Bowl? No big deal. But if you skipped the DFW Pug Rescue Pug Jams at Hop & Sting Brewery—SHAME ON YOU! The Oak Cliff Jazz Collective brought the house down, but let us be honest—the real stars were the pugs!

Picture this: a sea of curly tails grooving to smooth jazz music, their owners swaying along, and the occasional pug attempting to "sing" with the band. Some pugs took their dance moves very seriously, while others preferred to lounge like jazz legends in a smoky club—minus the smoke, plus a lot more treats. Between sips of craft beer and belly rubs, jazz lovers and pug enthusiasts united for an afternoon of great music, snorting, and shenanigans. If you were not there, do not worry—we’re sure the pugs will forgive you.
